Dancehall Mr Lexx joins Michael Jackson, Nitty Gritty and Taylor Swift as an artist wronged by his record label.

Dancehall artiste Mr. Lexx recently took to social media lamenting the fact that VP records own his publishing in a now-deleted post-Mr. Lexx real name Lenny took to Twitter and Instagram to vent that the New York-based record label owns 145 of his songs.

48 years after The Harder They Come, 45 years after Rockers, 29 years after the murder of Nitty Gritty 35 years after Michael Jackson, Sony, and 2 years after Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun Jamaican Dancehall artiste Mr. Lexx himself with this age-old problem.

VP owners

Born Christopher Palmer, Mr. Lexx formerly Lexxus emerged on the scene in the late 1990s his career took off in 2000 after signing to VP records a Jamaican label founded in 1979 by the late Vincent “Randy” Chin and his wife Patricia Chin, who owned the Randy’s Records store in Kingston, Jamaica (as seen in the 1978 film Rockers), Vincent Chin died in 2003 the label is now run by the Chins’ sons Randy and Christopher.

I don’t know if its lack of intelligence on Mr. Lexx part or lack of a TV but from Jimmy Cliffs The Harder They Come first dropped in 1972 everybody throughout the world was made aware of the unscrupulous record producer not wanting to pay the artiste for their work and when Rockers was finally released and found its way across the seas a few years later there was doubt that this practice was a common occurrence in Jamaica surely Mr. Lexx should of took heed when King Jammy refused to pay Nitty Gritty for his album leading to Nitty Gritty’s subsequent threats causing him to flee Jamaica for the UK eventually finding his death in New York at the hands of King Jammy’s family veteran DJ Super Cat I guess not.

Mr. Lexx parted ways with record label VP  after 10 years in 2011 but not before recording a huge array of songs under the label which it seems he will never see a cent for.

VP established itself as one of the first and largest independent record labels for reggae and dancehall, and with the popularity of the riddim sound of the early 2000s, the label achieved worldwide success for artists such as Sean Paul through the label’s deals with Warner Music Group’s Atlantic Records and Virgin Music Canada. VP Records has acquired the slogan “Miles Ahead in Reggae Music” to signify that they could be considered to be the future of music that derives from the Caribbean. In addition to reggae, VP is also known for dancehall, soca, and reggaeton music. VP also released a series of Riddim Driven albums, which feature various artist’s tracks using the same rhythm. The Biggest Reggae One-Drop Anthems is a series of CD reggae compilations that began in 2005 released by Greensleeves Records; Greensleeves was acquired by VP in 2008, and with Greensleeves’ catalog of over 12,000 songs, VP became the largest reggae label and publisher in the world. VP has also issued the compilations series Strictly the Best, which has now reached over 50 volumes.

Based on the above information it is safe to say that VP owns reggae music and Mr. Lexx is one of a long line of artists and producers that have fallen victim to VP Records and the underhand nature of the record business.
