Kanye West Donates Over $70,000 To Chicago Mayoral Candidate Backed By Chance The Rapper
The rapper helped Amara Enyia pay off her 2015 campaign
Kanye West donated more than $70,000 to a Chicago mayoral candidate so that she could run for the position once again.
Amara Enyia initially ran for Chicago mayor back in 2015 and reportedly never closed the campaign account. The Chicago Tribune notes the Enyia “was fined by state election officials for not filing quarterly campaign finance reports as required by law.”
Her bill amounted to $73,540, and according to Board of Elections spokesman Matt Dietrich, Enyia was only about to run for mayor again if she paid the fines by December 20.
Now, thanks to a single donation by Kanye West, Enyia has paid off her 2015 debt. A statement on her website reads: “The Amara Enyia campaign thanks Chicago native, Kanye West, for his generous action. Amara’s campaign is energizing people around the city with bold ideas and solutions that move Chicago forward. We are excited to engage people of all walks of life as we focus our efforts on getting on the ballot.”
Last week, fellow Chicago native and West’s collaborator, Chance the Rapper, endorsed Enyia for the position. It’s now been reported that he’ll be joining her at a rally this afternoon (Oct 23) on the South Side of Chicago.
Taking place from 2-3 p.m. at 63rd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue in Woodlawn, the pair will discuss “concerns around gentrification and displacement” in the neighborhood, according to a Facebook event created for the rally.
“If you want them to show up in your neighborhood, sound off below about issues you want to discuss!” it continues.
According to the Chicago Sun Times, Enyia says Chance the Rapper is also lending ideas to her campaign. These include improving mental health services and bringing “equity” to student funding in Chicago’s public schools.
“I would like to say – very narcissistically – if I back you, you have a chance, absolutely,” Chance said during his endorsement last week. “I want to work with somebody that’s about change. The one person, in my research of this wide-open race that views align with me, would obviously be candidate Amara Enyia.”
